Big Fish Small Fish: Where to get a quick fix for affordable fish & chips 

It’s very easy to satisfy your fish & chips cravings here in Singapore - you can literally find it within a few blocks down your street, or from a restaurant in a nearby shopping mall. This makes for a steep competition for the best fish & chips in town.  

We’ve heard many fish & chips aficionados declaring that a certain Singaporean-owned eatery, which had since grown out of its initial outlet in the Punggol East Container Park to a total of 5 branches islandwide today, actually serves one of the best fish & chips in Singapore! We’ve always passed by their quaint establishment in the basement of Tampines Mall, and brushed it off as the sister outlet of Long John Silvers, the classic fast-food chain to get your fish & chips fix. We decided to nip our curious noses in the bud, and give Big Fish Small Fish (BFSF) a try! 

Now on to the food - their specialty, as their name suggests, is fish! You can have your fish in a variety of ways; battered, grilled, served on a platter, and even in a bucket! What we loved about BFSF’s menu is that we can customize our meal according to our preferences. We knew we definitely had to try the Classic Fish & Chips, where you can choose from 7 types of fish, namely Salmon, Halibut, Sea Bass, Hoki, Dory, Alaskan Pollock, and also the Catch of the Day! Prices start from $9.90 onwards, depending on the fish you choose.

We were spoilt for choice, so we went with the recommended option – battered Sea Bass ($14.40) for the Classic Fish & Chips meal. It came with two free sides on top of the skin-on fries; we chose garlic bread and coleslaw.

The second meal we couldn’t resist was the Signature Fish & Crisps. The freshly sliced potato crisps were an interesting twist to regular fries. For this meal, we opted for the spicy battered Halibut ($13.60), also a recommended option in the menu. We totally enjoyed this one, especially with their special sauces!

For the health-conscious, you can have your fish grilled instead! Meals also come with sides and sauces that you cannot miss. 

If you are not a fish fan, BFSF serves chicken as well. There is also a variety of appetizers such as 8-inch Cheese Sticks, Fried Calamari, Onion Rings, and many more.  

BFSF is great for families and small groups of friends as they serve platters and bucket meals too. Go for The Fisherman Sampler if you want the best bang for your buck, as it serves 4 battered fish and a tonne of potato crisps for only $40.40!
