Dua before sleeping in English with transliteration
Allah s.w.t. created day and night to give us balance in life. After going through the hustle and bustle in the day at work or school, He blesses us with the darkness of night time for us to settle down and reflect on ourselves to regain back our spirit and start a new day tomorrow.
Have they not seen that We have made the night for them to rest and the daytime a beholder?
(Surah An-Naml, 27:86)
Sleep is an essential routine in life. It’s just as important as eating healthy and exercising. Good sleep affects our physical and mental wellbeing to give us a better quality of life every morning.
Sunnahs before sleeping
The secret in waking up to a good morning is to have a good bedtime routine. Manners of the beloved Prophet s.a.w. before going to sleep include:
Performing the wudhu
Brushing your teeth
Dusting your bed and pillow three times (to remove dirt)
Islam emphasizes on the importance of cleanliness even before going to bed, as it is part of our faith. It is our responsibility to take good care of ourselves mentally and physically. Poor sleep hygiene can result in frequent sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness.
Sleeping on your right side (your sleeping position affects your health too)
How we sleep can affect the body physically. Bad sleep postures might have an impact on our sleep quality and other health conditions. Sleeping on your side, also called as the lateral posture has various benefits. It helps maintain the position of your spine which eventually prevents neck, shoulder and back pain.
Freeing your heart from all worries and grudges and asking for forgiveness from The Most Forgiving
It is important that we try to end every day on a good note, even when things didn’t go as planned. Allah s.w.t. mentions in the Quran:
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)
Here are some supplications you can read before going to bed at night:
Allahumma bismika ahya wa amuutu
O Allah! In Your Name do I live and die.
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Allahumma qini ‘azabaka yawma tab’athu ‘ibadak
O Allah! Save me from Your punishment the day Your servants are resurrected
(Sunan At-Tirmizi)
Bismika rabbi wada’tu janbi, wa bika arfa’uhu, in amsakta nafsi, farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ‘ibadakas-soliheen.
In Your Name my Lord, I lay my side down, and in Your Name I rise (in the morning). If You take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You release it, then protect it with that which You protect Your righteous servants
(Sahih al Bukhari)
Before going to sleep, we can also read the ‘Three Quls’ (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas). As narrated by Aisyah r.a.
Every night before Rasulullah s.a.w. slept on his bed, he cupped his hands together hands (in making du’aa) and blew on them and recited (the surahs of) AI-Ikhlas, AI-Falaq and An-Naas and wiped those parts of the body that he could (wherever the hand could reach). He began with the head, then the face and then the front part of his body. This was done thrice.
(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Surah Al-Ikhlas
Qul huwa Allahu ahad
Say: He is Allah, the One!
Allahus-samad
God The Sustainer (needed by all)
Lam yalid walam yuulad
He begot no one nor was He begotten.
Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad
And there is none comparable unto Him.
Surah Al-Falaq
Qul a’uzu birabbil falaq
Say(Prophet), I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.
Min sharri maa khalaq
From the evil of that which He created
Wa min sharri ghaasiqin iza waqab
And from the evil of the night when it grows dark
Wa min sharrin-nafaathati fil ‘uqad
And from the evil of malignant witchcraft
Wa min sharri haasidin iza hasad
And from the evil of the envier when he envies.
Surah An-Naas
Qul a’uzu birabbin-naas
Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind
Malikin-naas
The Master of humankind
Ilaahin-naas
The God of humankind
Min sharril waswaasil khannaas
Against the harm of the sneaking whisperer
Allazee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas
Who whispers into the hearts of humankind
Minal jinnati wan-naas
From among the jinn and humankind
Sleep is one of the greatest blessings given by Him. Let us end our day by extending our gratitude towards the One who has given us the drive to achieve our goals each passing day.
With this sense of thankfulness, we hope that Allah s.w.t. will continue to increase our blessings and ease our daily tasks insyaAllah.
And Allah knows best.
