Dua during rain in English

Dua rain time islam

Rain is an incredible blessing which Allah s.w.t showers upon the earth. It is mentioned in numerous verses of the Quran, including the process of its formation and how it facilitates life on earth. This process is highlighted and described clearly in Surah Ar-Rum and Surah An-Nur whereby Allah s.w.t says:

It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments so you see the rain emerge from within them. And when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, immediately they rejoice.

(Surah Ar-Rum, 30:48)

Do you not see that Allah drives clouds? Then He brings them together, then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains (of clouds) within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away the eyesight.

 (Surah An-Nur, 24:43)

dua rain islamqa

Rain is part of Allah’s blessings and mercy that are sent to the earth. Therefore, it is no doubt that this is one of the best times to make lots of supplications. The Prophet s.a.w. encouraged us to pray when it rains. In a hadith, he mentions:

Two prayers (Dua) that are not rejected: The Dua when the call to prayer (Azan) is made and the Dua made when it rains

(Mustadrak Al-Hakim)

Here are a few Dua we can recite when it rains:

1) Dua for beneficial rain

Islamic dua for beneficial rain

It is narrated from Aisyah r.a. that when it rained the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. would say: "O Allah, make it a beneficial rain."

Allahumma soyyiban naafi’an

O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

2) Dua when hearing thunder

dua thunder and lightning

It is narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari in his book Al-Adab Al-Mufrad that the companion, Abdullah Bin al-Zubair r.a. would stop speaking when he heard a thunderclap. He would then read the verse from Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 13 (in prayer):

Subhaanal-lazii yusabbihur-ra’du bihamdihi wal-malaaikatu min khifatihi

Glory be to him whose praise the thunderclap sings and the angels glorify in awe of him.

(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

It is also narrated by Abdullah Ibn Umar and his father, Umar Ibn Al-Khattab r.a. that when the Prophet s.a.w. would hear the sound of thunder, he would say: “O Allah, do not kill us with Your wrath, and do not destroy us with Your punishment, and pardon us before that”

O Allah, do not kill us with Your wrath, and do not destroy us with Your punishment, and pardon us before that

3) Dua for protection from intense rain

dua heavy rain, wind and thunder to stop

Imam Al-Bukhari recorded that Anas Ibn Malik r.a. once narrated an event where the Prophet s.a.w. was delivering the Friday khutbah (sermon) when a man came and said: “O Allah's Messenger s.a.w!  livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah for rain”

So the Prophet s.a.w. raised his hands and prayed: “O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain!”. Anas r.a. then mentioned in that very narration that there were no clouds in the sky on that day when a big cloud suddenly appeared heading towards them from behind the Sila’ mountain. It came and rained so much they could hardly reach their homes. It continued raining till the next Friday.

Anas further said in that narration that the next Friday, a person came during the Friday khutbah and said: “O Allah's Messenger s.a.w! Livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah to withhold rain”

So the Prophet s.a.w. raised his hands and prayed:

Allahumma hawalaina wala ‘alaina

O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us.

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Dua when it rains excessively

Afterwards, Anas r.a added in that following narration that the rain stopped and they came out, walking in the sun.

4) Dua when it rains

dua for heavy rain and flood

It was narrated that the Prophet s.a.w led the companions in the Fajr prayer at Hudaibiya after a rainy night. In that narration, the Prophet s.a.w. informed the companions that there are those who attributed the rain to Allah and they are truly the believers. At the same time, the Prophet s.a.w. also warned the companions about ultimately attributing the phenomena to the causal effect of the rain.

The Arabs during that time would attribute the rain to the alignment of the planets and the stars that indicate the different seasons and time of the year. However, this would not arise to become a concern if one were to understand the causal effects while believing with the conviction that all of the order of creation is by the will and power of Allah s.w.t.

From this hadith, the Prophet s.a.w. taught us to pray when it rains:

Mutirna bifadhlillahi wa rahmatihi

We have received rain from Allah’s bounty and mercy.

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)
